Motivation Musts.

Tis the season where motivation is lacking;

not only with physical activity but most areas of life that benefit our mind, body and spirit.

Here are some tips and tricks to stay motivated not just through the holiday season, but all year long as well!

 1.  Set Goals & Intentions

Start with an easily obtainable goal and progress to bigger challenges.

Do you wish to lose weight? Be more flexible? Meditate often? Heal your heart? Go on a hike? Go to the gym 4-5 times a week? Run a 5K or a Marathon?

Whatever the extent of your goals, put it on paper. Write your aspirations down, both short term as well as long term. Writing down your goals makes them real and tangible.

Writing a progress journal may also help. Record what you did each day/week to reach your goals. Keep track of your progress and how you felt after you exercised, meditated or worked closer to that goal. Be your own motivation and write yourself kick ass notes along the way!

2.  Partner up

You don’t have to go it alone! Find a partner with common goals/interests and be each other’s motivation.

Get together with a friend or loved one to hit the gym or take a class. Ask a co-worker to take a long walk or run with you during lunch break. Coordinate a weekly sport day or hike day with your family. There are people all around you that need you as much as you need them!

3. Change up your scenery

Make it fun and try something new like kick boxing or aerial yoga.   Maybe get a group together for a book club, a beach clean up, go rock climbing or anything that will spice up your routine. Even something as simple as changing your room layout or hair color can get you out of your rut and into a better mindset.

Change your perspective and go somewhere new. From as simple as trying a different workout studio in town or visiting a national park near you, to checking out another state or even country. Open your horizon and  your boundaries will be limitless.

4.  Get in touch with your creative side.

All areas of your life will benefit from a creative outlet. Whether it is dance, painting, writing, photography or anything else that inspires you, find it and run with it. Make it your own, you don’t even have to share it with anyone else, it is yours for enjoyment.

As for exercise, it doesn’t have to be boring, and you are more likely to stick with it if you are having fun. So ditch the treadmill and find some beautiful trails in the area. Leave that class that you could do with your eyes closed and make up your own workout routine. Even setting a new popping workout playlist can get you in the mood!

5. Treat yourself

After you have achieved a goal, completed a work out or anything else that you set out to do, take a minute to bask in that feeling of accomplishment. Internally honor yourself for the time and energy that you put into it.

External rewards help too! When you reach a long-term goal, get yourself those new workout shoes, outfit, or yoga mat that you have been eyeing.

6. Be kind to yourself

Listen to yourself, not just your body, but your mind and spirit as well. Be gentle on yourself and pace it out. Take time to breathe, drink water and rest when you need to. Eat natural grown foods and try to stay away from processed, sugary and modified foods that will bring your energy down.

Keep in mind that movement and health is not always high energy. Meditation, yin yoga and down time are equally as necessary. Find your time to unwind and just be.

Now that you have read through, start with one or a few of these tips and grow from there. Remember, healthy is a lifestyle and it starts with wanting it, if you want it enough you will prevail.
